Golden Huzuz, the City of Delights, is the "heart of the heart" of the enlightened lands.

It is the religious and political center of Zakhara and, say its inhabitants, the most beautiful city in the entire world. But beneath the beauty lies mystery, for the court of the Grand Caliph is as full of intrigue as the Grand Bazaar is full of adventures waiting to happen.

Come, explore the delights and dangers of Huzuz the Golden, heart of the Al-Qadim campaign world.

Product History

City of Delights, by Tim Beach, Tom Prusa and Steve Kurtz, is a sourcebook for the Al-Qadim game line. It was released in July 1993.

Continuing the Al-Qadim Line. When kicking off the Al-Qadim line in 1992, TSR released two core books: the rulebook Al-Qadim: Arabian Adventures (1992) and the setting book Al-Qadim: Land of Fate (1992). After that the line focused mainly on adventure boxes in the "ALQ" line, which mixed background with scenarios.

In 1993, in between the release of ALQ3: A Dozen and One Adventures (1993) and ALQ4: Secrets of the Lamp (1993), TSR published one more sourcebook — what many consider to be the third core book for the Al-Qadim setting. City of Delights details Golden Huzuz, the political center of Zakhara; in doing so it gave Al-Qadim campaigns a clear starting point and a home base.

Adventuring Tropes. City of Delights offers numerous story hooks that suggest how D&D adventures can be different in Al-Qadim. They outline kidnappings, explorations, investigations, and searches. Full campaigns are also laid out focusing on law, crime, politics, and mystery. Oh, and there's a dungeon to explore too.

It Was the Time of Cities. By 1993, city sourcebooks were becoming increasingly common at TSR. Other books released around the same time included SJR5: "Rock of Bral" (1992), and DSS1: "City-State of Tyr" (1993).

It Was the Time of Monsters. City of Delights features a page-long discussion about playing monster PCs — including goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, lizard men, ogres, half-ogres, orcs, and half-orcs. This was another rising trend at TSR. As usual, Basic D&D had led the way, thanks to its "PC" Creature Crucible series (1989-1992). The topic had also been broached in AD&D's Time of the Dragon (1989), CGR1: The Complete Spacefarer's Handbook (1992), and PHBR10: The Complete Book of Humanoids (1993).

Expanding Al-Qadim. The City of Delights box provides considerable detail on the city of Huzuz. It includes one sourcebook that focuses on the geography of the city and another that details the society. The result is a very detailed corner of AL-Qadim.

Monsters of Note. Several brand-new monsters appear including winged cats and vermin elementals. The vargouille, which had debuted in Monster Manual II (1983), also makes its first 2e appearance.

About the Creators. All three authors got their stars in Monstrous Compendiums. Beach was the most prolific of the three and would next work on what's probably his best-known D&D book: Red Steel (1994). Prusa and Kurtz each authored a half-dozen books or so; prior to the release of City of Delights, Kurtz mostly focused on Al-Qadim, while Prusa's work was more scattered.

About the Product Historian

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

I bought the POD a couple of years ago and yes it was missing the things mentioned below by Matt B. I however managed to buy the original box set and it is complete. Is there a possibility to contact dtrpg and provide them with the missing scans?? or that's not the way it works and scans must be provided by wotc only??

The POD copy is missing several things - #1 the Gem of Zakhara cover page, #2 Golden Hazus pgs 93-94 (Appendix A ' new magic of Hazus'), #3 it include NO monstrous compendium sheets (should have 16 pgs), #4 it has NO pages of the 2 poster maps that were in the box set , #5 the 8 cards in the box set each had 2 sides - one with text the other with either pics or maps on them, the POD includes only the text sides, not the 8 pics or maps. I let dndclassics know.

I used to think they had good customer service, but they keep insisting for me to send them pics of the problem. Umm... they did NOT include about 30 pages + that should have been in the book (that were in the original box set) - how can I take pics of what isn't there? I finally sent them a bunch of pics (from pdfs) showing what SHOULD have been there and some showing where they probably would be in the book (if they had been included). Its becoming a nightmare.

DO NOT ORDER THIS BOOK !!!! Has anyone else gotten this book? Please let dndclassics know about anything missing. Ebay, tsrarchive.com, etc.. all can show exactly what should be included.

I eventually got a refund. They had no idea if/when the book scan would get fixed so they couldn't send me a replacement.

Nothing new, except they are super extra slow about things due to COVID. I find it extremely unlikely that they have updated the file for printing.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
