Vurt: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game

A feather that opens a door.

A door that opens to infinite worlds.

And now a tabletop RPG that lets you explore them all.

Vurt: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game is an RPG based on the visionary and hallucinatory science fiction of author Jeff Noon (winner of the Arthur C. Clarke award). Amid the glass-strewn streets of the lethal and anarchic Manchester England of the near future, players ingest slender Vurt feathers to travel to parallel worlds as vivid, unique, and unpredictable as our wildest dreams. But they're no mere fantasies. These worlds- and all the wonders and horrors they contain - are as real, and every bit as dangerous, as the one you were born in.

Vurt the RPG is a Cypher System game. The corebook contains the complete Cypher System rules, modified to bring the grittiness of cyberpunk streets and the vibrant freedom of dreams to your game sessions. That means that, other than pencil, paper and a couple of dice, the Vurt corebook is all you need to play the game. The Cypher System is the hugely popular rule set that powers Numenera and The Strange by Monte Cook Games.

The Vurt corebook has over 100 all new cyphers, loads of full adventures, a bestiary for both the real world and the vurt world, pregenerated characters and an enormous setting chapter which delves with great detail into the boroughs and districts of Greater Manchester, the worlds largest megacity.

This is a beautifully presented and well written book. As an absentee from TTRPGs for sometime and a newcomer to the ‘Cypher System’, I found the mechanics (or lack of them) explained efficiently and clearly, which allowed me to progress quickly to the wealth of background material that is provided to play in the Vurt world. My only criticism would be that it could do with some more ideas of what to do in the world, rather than tread the same path as the protagonists from Jeff Noon’s books. GMs and PCs could easily find themselves intimidated by the setting, and the original literature that it’s based on. Saying that though, there are some great introductory adventures to get you going, as well as detailed ‘feather trips’. I think this game deserves to be more popular, and it’s popularity could have suffered due to the lazy ‘cyberpunk’ tag. But I urge you to jump in with confidence, take the feather all the way down and make it your own, as I’m sure that’s how Jeff Noon would like you to...See more

Check out my full review at Comics, Clerics, & Controllers on Facebook. Really cool concepts in the game, love to see how it grows and develops.

I'm always interested in cyberpunk themed material, but there seems to be very little description of this game anywhere, even on the publisher's site. It's all basically the same text as above. Can anyone supply a little more detail?

While I haven't picked up the rpg yet, I did quite enjoy the novel years ago, and still have a copy today! It's far from conventional Cyberpunk. It involves strange feathers (drugs) one tickles one's throat with. Different color feathers result in various shared hallucinatory effects. In the novel, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vurt) the main character has somewhat of an obsession with his sister, who happens to have "disappeared" into one of these realities. The quest in the novel, then, involves Scribble chasing down his sister and interfacing with various nefarious ne'erdowells in hopes of finding and freeing Desdemona.

I know Jeff Noon was involved in the creation of this game, so I'd imagine it's up to snuff, but I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. There are far too many other goodies awaiting my mindgrapes.

Whilst there are certainly comparisons that could be drawn, ‘Vurt’ never struck me as particularly ‘Cyberpunk’. Maybe because when I read the novel at the time, the themes and language used felt rather contemporary yet fantastical.

But the beautifully presented TTRPG is an exciting premise for any player / GM. Yes you can run around and have adventures in a well described dystopian mega city, but you can also take a feather and slip into the ‘Vurt’ dream world and play...well anything. Maybe the feather you took could have been based on your favourite DnD or Cathulu adventure? All of which can easily be converted with the easy to use ‘Cypher System’. My only advice would be don’t be stifled or intimidated by the source material.

Hi David, sorry for the slow response! Unfortunately, we don't have translated versions of the book; it is English only. Hopefully we will be able to do translations in the future.

We are working on a POD file for Vurt right now. I'm not sure about the discount for PDF purchasers, but if I can get that set up, it sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just an update to this comment. After looking into it, a POD version of Vurt is not likely. The problem is that, at 426 pages, the cost of the single print will make POD not viable financially. Also, for a book this size, it is important that the binding be of sufficient strength to keep the spine from cracking. POD printers are great for smaller titles, but we're not confident that the book would be sturdy enough. Sorry about that!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
