My Little Pony: Tails of Equestria - The Storytelling Game

Not only do these folks know the TV show well, but they also created a system that is really good. Everything is rated by a die type, and you have to roll a target number or higher (2-20). The book is easy to read, and easy to understand (my 8 year old read the whole thing with no problems). The system and the adventures have both adult and kids apeal to it.

The only things that are negative is that I think they have too many target numbers. They should have less numbers. I understand why you would want to include a d20, but it's quite a jump between a d12 and d20, so I woiuld have just left them out (but it's not an deal breaker by far).

They also wasted a lot of pages on random number pages at the end of the book. These are in case you don't have any dice... but I'm pretty sure that if you were able to get ahold of this book, then the place you ordered it from has dice. So, it was just wasted space.

I'm hoping this game stays on the market, because the other MLP rpg coming out looks like it's aimed more at adults with that system that does not look kid friendly.

Amazing Heroes

I was a big fan of Amazing Tales, so of course I had to get this game. It did not disapoint! As it says in the decription it is for an older audience, and has more rules than his family game, but it's still very "indie" and narative types of rules (YAY!).

It's nice to not have to read a big book, and I love the default setting to the game as it has a lot of info packed into 49 pages, including the iconic pre-gens, and adventure ideas. And there are two really good adventures included too.

Of the things I love about this game the most:

• There is no list os super powers, the players come up with what each of their powers does (which means you don't have to look up stuff during the game).

• The game uses conditions instead of hit points. The conditions rules are more story friendly as they are made up for the situation that caused them.

• The GM does not roll dice. Now this might sound lame, as who does not want to roll dice? But here me out: the GM not having to roll dice keeps the heat off of you when the players roll poorly. It also helps get rid of the adversary habit that has still stuck around in gaming tradtions from back in the dark ages of D&D.

• Not only does the players section and gm sections have a page dedicated to better practices in being a player and gm, but the book has more great modern gaming advice spread throughout.

The game is easy. It's fun. It starts you with things if you don't have ideas at first, and because it is the same writer as Amazing Tales, it has advice on playing with your kids. It also breaks the mold on how supers rpg books are written and designed. $10 is a bargan for this game!

Pugmire Core Rulebook Phone PDF

First of all, if you play this game, you really should have this version of the rules. After all, it's free. But most importantly it's nice to have a rules reference on your phone, and that is laid out for the shape of a phone's screen. I wish every game had one of these.

The table of contents are hyper linked (quick links) to the pages, and at the end they have a bunch of quick links in the index. There are only a few book marks and they link to combat related stuff. It looks like it was either messed up, or it was started, but never finished. It would be nice to have a fully book marked pdf, but that is my only complaint (espceially for a free rulebook pdf).

Great job, and thank you!

Titansgrave: The Ashes of Valkana

I bought this after watching the show (which I highly recomend), because Will's style of running games is just like mine. This is a great mini-campaign which fits seemlessly into the Fantasy AGE rules. * It also gives you encounters and scenes that were not in the show (and two other city-states with story hooks to go beyond the show).

There are only a few things that are odd, and that is that they don't give you a difficulty rating for each encounter, nor do they give you advice on when to advance your characters. Also, some of the locations in the adventure in the city state of Nestora can not be found on the map... and that is dissapinting since they do go into detail of that city. BUT, to be honest those two minor details are not dealbreaksers and I still give this a "GOOD" rating!

If you loved how the D&D 4th edtion monster manuals gave cool background and stories to their monsters, you will love this book too! They even give some story hooks to add to your games, which is awesome, because there were a few monsters that I never thought about adding to adventures until I read some of those.

I have run this game more than any other in the past two years (and ran Dragon Age more than most other games in the few years before that) and I really do like this system! It gives you a basic D&D like game without all the B.S. like Alignments (none), encumbrance (none.. just use common sense), or spell slots (there are spells you know, and you use magic points to use them). I also like how you can play an orc, and that half breeds are "optional" (I personally think that those things were just min-max tools that usually don't live up to a story that the player is supposed to roleplay). And I like their focus rules vs. the standard skill points of other games (tho, they do have too many focuses).

What makes the game more modern is the stunt point system, which works really well with combat, and magic, but is a bit awkward with roleplaying, and exploration (those two can work, but your group has to really try to make it work well).

For the size of the book, it has a good selection of monsters/opponents, magic items, and spells (tho, there are some spells are are kind of worthless, like "Arcane Spring"). I tell my players to level up (and it actually has that as an optional rule), but I do like how each encounter has an X.P. amount based off of difficulty, instead of having to calculate that stuff. It seems more organic. But.. just like with D&D and all of it's clones, I think 20 levels is too much (13th Age has it right on that).

The art is also great (it's a mix of art from some of their other games, and some made just for Fantasy AGE). And to top it off: It comes with a great adventure! Since the days that they had the Warhammer license, they write great adventures, and "Adventure in Highfalls Swale is no exception."

The bad things: Combat just takes too long. It is a combo of most good opponents armor rating (which you always subtract from most damage), and the small amount of damage most people can do. This usually leaves you with long combats (compare it to Pathfinder length), or having to limit the amount of opponents (or modifying opponents if the story calls for several). To me, this really gets annoying after a while (I had to use home brew rules of bonus damage, and mob/mook type of rules that I borrowed from other games like Fate and 13th Age).

The other bad thing... and to be honest, this was not a problem for me, but I can see people coming from D&D or Pathfinder finding this an issue: Not a lot of variety compared to those two other games. There are only three classes. You do end up customizing your class with the options you take (especially after 4th level when you get your first specialty), but I feel the game drives the story more than trying to give you a bunch of fluff (and that is fine with me).

So, my only real complaint is that combat takes too long because of the limited amount of damage one can do to someone with good armor. But if you are wanting an easy system with some neat gimmicks (sunt point system), and more modern rules that cut out the old school trappings like Alignment & spell slots, I highly recommend this game!

I really love what they have done with the 5th ed rules. it seems they trimmed all the outdated stuff that somehow stayed in D&D, and added in some great story friendly rules ( like drop the useless alighnments, and replace it with personality traits, which you actually get rewarded for roleplayimg them).

The magic system makes so much more sense with how they use spell sots (it is pretty much magic points by another name). They use a reward system similar to insparation, but has more uses. There are several othere streamline rules that makes the game a better version of 5th ed (IMHO).

just like Pugmire, I am very fasinated with the post-appocolypic fantasy setting, where animals have evolved after mankind had vanished.

it does not have pre-gens (character creation is really easy tho) or an adventure, but for $2 this game is a total steal!
