Dealing With Your Demons
Publisher: High Level Games
by Brandon S. [Verified Purchaser]

I really enjoyed this. Dealing With Your Demons is an adventure designed for DnD 5e, though it's largely setting agnostic to the point that the concepts and characters in play could fairly easily be fitted to an older edition, Pathfinder, or the fantasy game of one's choice.

The crux of the adventure rests on playing with and subverting typical expectations and DnD archetypes (in this case Kobolds as evil fodder). This is done as a means to tell a story of consequence and morality, while still making for a fun fantasy yarn, and this book does a beautiful job of it.

Speaking of beautiful, the art is absolutely gorgeous, both the cover and the interior pieces, and the colors absolutely pop in the print edition. Apart from the convenience of having a physical book in one's hand, one could easily justify going print on demand with this one purely to get a close-up look at some of the line work.

The adventure isn't incredibly lengthy, but it's very well written and reasonably priced for what you're given, and it's the sort of story that could easily be slotted into an existing campaign. In fact, its themes of consequence and of things not being what they seem could be the perfect mix up in an otherwise traditional campaign.

In all, I would absolutely recommend picking this up. High Level Games consistently puts out good stuff, and Dealing With Your Demons is no exception.

The Savage Age Intro Bundle [BUNDLE]
Publisher: White Wolf
by Brandon S. [Verified Purchaser]

Really enjoyed this. The core book and accompanying tribe books provide an excellent and entertaining view into a seldom explored setting that looks genuinely fun to play. Savage Age offers a solid mix of new material and twists on some familiar stuff to make it feel like it all belongs in the time period. The art is great, and everything is well laid out, but it's the amount of research and care put into bringing the prehistorical period to life that really rings it home for me.

In The Savage Age, silver is rare, the divide between the mundane and spirit world is much thinner (or not so present), and gnosis is more prevalent, but that doesn't mean things are safer. The delirium hasn't set in, the world is harder to travel, and a thin gauntlet cuts both ways. This is the sort of game wherein an obstacle could just as easily be an immensely powerful spirit or a lack of common language. These are books that really set out to make the most of their setting, and I look forward to seeing more as it continues to be fleshed out.

Whether you want to explore the War of Rage, spice up your usual game night, or just love the idea of getting to say "Cavemen and Werewolves" as a pitch, check this line out!

Many Names of Odin
Publisher: Onyx Path Publishing
by Brandon S. [Verified Purchaser]

Really dug this one. Many Names of Odin, like the excellent Many Names of Heimdall before it, offers both an alternative virtue set for the Aesir and a number of alternative mantles for the titular god.

Each one represents a unique take rooted in a different aspect of the mythology and manages to feel both fleshed out and full of potential for play. You can tell a lot of love and research went into this, and it comes through in the final product.

If you're a Scion GM or have any plans to play an Aesir scion, definitely check this out. It's well worth the money even just as a fun read.

Dark Side of the Moon: Ready Made Characters

Review copy provided.

Found this to be really helpful. I'm a fairly new Trinity fan, and this is the sort of resource I can really use to get rolling.

  • You get six well-written characters of good variety and depth, and as with a lot of Heath's works, plenty of potential story hooks both baked into the bios themselves and listed in their own sections (organized by character).

-Even if you're not in the market for pre-mades as such, they're each a quality read, and the plot hooks make this book double as a Jump Start. Will almost certainly be referring to this when I try my hand at running it in the future.

Road Warriors: Ready Made Characters
Publisher: Onyx Path Publishing

Review copy was provided.

Historically, I've never been a huge fan of ready-made NPC collections. Nothing against them, but I tended to prefer making my own. That said, Road Warriors manages to offer up fully-realized, multidimensional, (and above all, interesting) characters for use in one's chronicle that not only avoid feeling cliche, but made me want to know what else they might get up to. Consider me a convert.

  • To begin with, Shields and Hersey's art looks quite nice, and while the character portraits initially had me a bit confused in a few instances where they don't echo some of the descriptors provided, there's enough overlap for each to compliment the other.

  • The book itself actually doubles as a Jumpstart chronicle of sorts, offering up five different story hooks at the beginning which are designed to play off of the six characters described further in. There's a pleasant sense of cohesion as a result, and I could easily see a storyteller weaving multiple aspects of the book together.

  • As in some other Heath-produced works, Boston gets its share of attention, making it perfect for anyone using the city. That said, it's all presented such that one could easily tweak things to a location of their desire, and the subsequent character bios are rich enough in detail, culture, and locales that one could easily mine any given entry for settings and plot points. The local Terra Incognitae mentioned throughout the book was a particular highlight for me.

If you want well-written NPCs to populate your chronicle, this is definitely worth picking up, but there's enough meat on the bone here for anyone looking for campaign material, inspiration, or simply a good read.

The Curse Pole: A Vampire: The Dark Ages 20th One Page Chronicle Jumpstart
Publisher: White Wolf
by Brandon S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/02/2017 10:04:13

Short version: A very nice, flexible, and well-written Jumpstart at a good price that's great for a one-shot or a springboard to something bigger.

  • The NPCs are a highlight here (and some of my personal favorites of all those throughout the various Storyteller Vault Jumpstarts) and I can actually see myself making use of them in the future. I don't normally care much for pre-made NPCs, but I think they lend themselves really well to micro-chronicles and story seeds like these.

  • Surprisingly good atmosphere crammed into a few pages. Really captures that Dark Ages feel, and the seeds presented could work equally well as an occult tale or a political whodunnit.

  • The different options presented for just what is going on and who is responsible offer this particular Jumpstart considerable flexibility. That said, by its very nature, it is written in such a way that one could easily substitute in their own NPCs, locations, or make tweaks to the plot as necessary.

  • Well-priced for what you get. If you enjoy jump-starts, this is certainly worth the money, and if you don't know if they might be for you, this one is definitely a good value to sate your curiosity.

Things Go Southy: One Page Chronicle Jumpstart
Publisher: White Wolf
by Brandon S. [Verified Purchaser]

Short version: this is exactly what promises to be, and if it sounds like something you want, it almost certainly is.

I was initially skeptical of whether or not I would have any use for something like this, but the low price encouraged me to give it a shot. Not only am I glad I did, but I made it a point to grab the others in the series as a result.

The actual PDF is 11 pages, including covers. As advertised, the Jumpstart itself is a single page, with the rest devoted largely to NPC bios and character sheets. It all looks good, but what impressed me was just how much the book is able to accomplish with that single page of JumpStart. You get just enough information on the setting, the forces in play, and a story seed to, well, jump off from there, and it's surprisingly effective. The NPCs are well put together, and could easily be useful beyond this chronicle if one so desired.

For my part, I've never been a big module guy. I prefer to just get inspiration or broad ideas from sources and then put my own story together from there, and these seem to be written with that approach in mind. Great as a one shot or a springboard, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for either of those.
