Book of Hallowed Might II: Portents and Visions

The Book of Hallowed Might II: Portents and Visions is a book of divine spells, magic items, more from Malhavoc Press. While a sequel to the original Book of Hallowed Might, that book is not required to use this one. The PDF is just over five megabytes in size, and comes watermarked with your name in tin print at the bottom left corner of each page. The book is sixty-six pages long, including two pages for the covers, one for the credits/legal, one for the table of contents, one for ads, and one for the OGL. The table of contents is not hyperlinked, but there are full bookmarks.

The art in the BoHM2 is fairly plentiful. The only full color artwork is on the front and back covers. The interior art is all black and white, with most of it being illustrations, though several maps are also to be found of various locations. Most pages don?t have borders, though some at various chapter openings do. Altogether, printing this PDF might be problematic for some people, but shouldn?t be too difficult of a hurdle.

The theme of the second Book of Hallowed Might is a small grouping of gods called the Celestial River pantheon. This collection of six gods forms the basis of the book, with each of the subsequent five chapters focusing on a single god (save for one chapter that focuses on two gods who are twins) and giving various new spells, feats, magic items, monsters, etc. that are related to that deity. In this way, the BoHM2 is very modular. If the GM needs a capricious sea goddess, he can focus on chapter two, dedicated to the Chaotic Neutral deity Dorana. Each chapter has an eclectic gathering of new crunch dedicated to that deity?s portfolio, and most have a specific place described, usually a collection of that god?s faithful so as to have a place to introduce that deity and the new crunch into the game.

The book ends with an appendix converting all of the spells to the Arcana Evolved format, listing them chapter by chapter for an easier breakdown. It then gives an index of the new crunch, followed by spell lists for the new spells.

All in all, the Book of Hallowed Might II does a very good job at what it sets out to do, which is par for the course with Monte?s work. He presents a wide and diverse variety of new material for divine spellcasting characters, and unlike some of the earlier Eldritch Might works, has presented it in a way that logically ties everything together. Even if you don?t want to use any of the new gods, characters, or places, the crunch alone makes the BoHM2 worth it.

LIKED: It goes without saying that the new mechanics are solid and interesting, but the holistic design of having each chapter dedicated to a different god in a small pantheon was an inspired way to present the new material.

DISLIKED: While it is just a small thing, none of the deities here have a divine level presented (that is, it does not say if they are a Greater deity, Lesser deity, etc). Also, while not a huge thing, and printer-friendly version might have helped somewhat.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
